Descrizione
This book offers a coherent and progressive collection of lecture notes and worked exercises for Machine Design, conceived as an operational support for the study of analysis and sizing methods for mechanical components and structures. The essential theoretical foundations are recalled and immediately applied through numerical examples, solved problems and proposed exercises, arranged in a sequence of increasing difficulty.
The first part introduces the fundamentals of stress and strain, elastic constitutive laws and the governing equations of elasticity, providing the language required to interpret mechanical response and to build reliable design checks. It then presents the finite element method for plane problems, with particular attention to the practical use and limitations of the most common element types. The volume continues with classical plate bending theory and the membrane and bending behaviour of shells of revolution, with a focus on pressure components such as cylindrical and spherical vessels and their heads. Design-oriented aspects are discussed throughout, including the interpretation of stress resultants, boundary-layer effects and edge constraints, and verification criteria for pressure equipment. The second part is devoted to structural integrity and durability, covering elasto-plastic analysis, linear elastic fracture mechanics, fatigue crack growth, low-cycle fatigue and creep, with emphasis on modelling choices and on a rigorous, critical approach to engineering calculations.
Developed primarily for the Machine Design course of the international master’s degree programme in Mechanical Engineering for Sustainability at the Forlì campus, the contents are also well suited to analogous master’s level courses in Nuclear Engineering and Chemical Engineering, where pressure equipment and time-dependent and damage phenomena are equally central.
