One of the most exciting developments in the Asia-Pacific region is the emergence of a “Transnational Chinese Economy” which might become one of the gratest engines of growth for the world economy, as well as one of the largest entities. In this context, Singapore’s economy and political system – despite its small size – is viewed as a model to attain greater chinese unity built on greater diversity and an improved climate of regional cooperation. In particular, the “Growth Triangle”, linking Singapore to the South Malaysian state of Johor and to Indonesia’s neighbouring Riau islands, marks the start of a process that, in addition to continue to sustain the Asian-Pacific economic dynamism, could establish a new Asia-Pacific competitive order.
