It is becoming increasingly common nowadays to hear art historians bewail the lack of the grand design, the monumental scheme, the “Grossgehirnen” of yesteryear. Art history students seeking the certainty of a comprehensive vision may find themeselves sitting at the feet of shallow theoreticians whose knowledge of current art-historical research is based solely on hearsay. Is there innovation in art history? There is, but that is just the problem – it has become pluriform.
