When the Comité International d’Histoire de l’Art decided to allot one of the ten sections of the 24th International Congress to noneteenth century sculpture, it did so under the rubric of “areas neglected or insufficently explored”. There can be no question that the field has in fact been neglected until very recently; twenty years ago it would have been almost impossible to assemble a group of twenty-five scholars such as those whose papers are collected in this volume.
